Responsible Business: Tools for defending labour rights in the global economy

There is a multitude of international legal instruments, guidelines and standards which purport to protect labour rights. These are often criticised on the basis of a lack of enforceability.  Despite this, there are instances of the effective use of these documents as tools to exert pressure on employers and other key economic actors to make a real difference in the lives of workers around the world.

At CSR Geneva’s next breakfast, Claire Parfitt of UNI Global Union, an international federation of trade unions representing 15 million workers in the service sectors of 900 countries, will discuss some UNI’s initiatives including the use of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the ILO core labour standards and the UN Principles for Responsible Investment.

The breakfast is on Wednesday, 2nd April, from 8 to 9 a.m. Please bring 11CHF per person (which buys you one tea or coffee and all different sorts of interesting bread with jam, honey and chocolate spread – anything on top of this must be paid for additionally: it’s delicious and a bargain!). We’ll be at Le Pain Quotidien, 21 Boulevard Helvétique in Rive (1205 Genève), in a room on the right-hand side of the café as you look from the street – come in through its own glass door there.
